In 2002, there were no stainless steel water bottles for personal hydration, and the issues linked to plastic use were not widely known so Robert Seals, the inventor and founder of Klean Kanteen, starting cobbling together the first prototype with things he bought at local hardware store in California. In 2004, the first Klean Kanteen went onto market to give people a better option than plastic, a safe, healthy, lightweight, reusable bottle. Since then an expanding line of durable stainless steel solutions have been created to replace toxic plastic.
